A little piece of advice...
If you happen to be in the Boston MFA on a late Friday afternoon walking down the short flight of steps between the Art of the Americas galleries and the Impressionist galleries:
Pay attention to your feet.
And to the steps.
I sure didn't and look where it got me...
Yep.
That's right.
Broken ankle
(aka...an "acute comminuted intra-articular spiral fracture of the distal fibula")
Torn ligament.
Impending surgery.
Woohoo!
As I lay in the hospital bed on the evening of Friday, January 2nd waiting to get what is to be my first set of X-rays, I think to myself, "The Universe has a very peculiar sense of humor. Happy start of 2026."
But here's the thing...I didn't get mad.
Or even hysterical.
"You sound much better and calmer than I thought you would," says my mom on Saturday, when we finally talk.
"Well," I reply, "what good is it going to do me to get all crazy about this? It''s not going to help me heal."
"True. That's a good way of looking at it. I admire you."
"There's nothing to admire," I say. "It is what it is. I have no control over the situation, but I do have control over my reaction to it. So I'm just trying to stay calm and figure out how to move forward."
So that's what I'm doing.
Breaking my ankle wasn't my plan for 2026, but apparently the Universe has something else in mind altogether.
What is it?
I don’t know. But I’m going to take the time to listen to whatever message I’m being sent…because this feels like a big one. Something important. Something I really need to hear.
I'll keep you posted.
